Traditional vs. Eclectic

When it comes to Wicca, there has been a large discussion about the differences between practicing within a tradition or practicing in an eclectic way. Each of them have their own benefits, but it is up to the practitioner to decide what is most comfortable for them.

The biggest issue is that many practicing Witches that follow a specific tradition feel that you cannot truly be a "Witch" unless you also follow a tradition. They feel that tradition is passed on from generations, and with that the the magick of the tradition remains. Eclectic Witches don't necessarily agree there (and for the record I am not saying that ALL traditionalist Witches say this)!

With that i ask you this: "What makes a Witch, a Witch?"

In my opinion, a Witch is more than the tradition that they follow, or don't follow. If you practice within the Wiccan faith, and follow the Law of Three, the Wiccan Rede, and the 13 Preambles does that make you a Witch? Not entirely, you see there are many people that practice those things but can't really call themselves Witfches. So what does it mean to be a Witch then?

Witches don't only practice they live their religion. Tradition or no tradition if it it your own, and you live it everyday, that is what allows you to be a Witch. Wicca as a whole is not just worship on specific days, or casting spells, or healing the Earth. It is about allowing the energy of Nature deep within your being, experiencing it for all that it is worth, and living it everyday! The Goddess and God are not going to be upset with you if you miss a ritual, they won't be angry if you follow a tradition or not, they are built of perfect love and trust and exude that energy outward toward their children.

It is not about what you do on the outside only, it's about what you do inside as well. Anyone can pick up a book on Wicca or spells and call themselves a Witch. Anyone can join a traditional Coven, or practice in a eclectic fashion and call themselves a Witch. It isn't until you live the life of Magick everyday, and exude that perfect love and trust (as the human side of us permits) that you can REALLY call yourself a Witch.
